14-year-old Nanaimo girl sexually assaulted: Mounties

NANAIMO — Police are investigating the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl in Nanaimo.

Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien says the girl told their members she was walking alone in the Tunnah Road and Opal Road area, off Uplands Drive, around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. She told police that’s when a man walking by grabbed her and pushed her up against an object.

“He touched her inappropriately, sexually assaulting her,” said O’Brien. “She pushed back and this was successful and she was able to get away from him. She ran to her home, told her parents the next day and they reported it to police.”

The suspect is a white man in his mid-20’s, about 5’6″ to 5’8″ with a muscular build. He has pale skin, some acne scarring, light coloured stubble on his chin and lower lip and bushy eyebrows. He was reportedly wearing a dark hoodie with a white skater logo and khaki pants.

“It is a very safe area, but we recognize that these incidents do happen from time-to-time,” said O’Brien. “The girl did everything you’re supposed to do. She fought back, she told an adult and it was reported to us. If you are ever faced with a similar situation this is exactly what you need to do.”

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
