EARLIER:

RCMP are searching for a Nanaimo Correctional Centre inmate who escaped custody while at his mother’s funeral.

Port Alberni RCMP Cpl. Amelia Hayden said David Enease Blackmore, 45, was taken to Port Alberni on Aug. 1 for the funeral. She said Blackmore ran out the back door of the funeral home after being permitted to pay his respects.

“We’ve searched everywhere we can, we continue to search, but at this point we don’t know where he is,” Hayden said, adding it’s her understanding Blackmore is from Port Alberni.

Blackmore was in custody for drug offences and possession of stolen property, Hayden said. She noted while his crimes aren’t violent, anyone who sees him should not approach him.

“When somebody has escaped custody you don’t know what their mindset is. Are they in a desperate mode? You don’t know.”

Blackmore is white, 6′ and 161 lbs. He has brown hair and eyes and a goatee. His tattoos include an ice cream cone of skulls on his inside left forearm, Pegasus on his inside right forearm and a scorpion on his right shoulder.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911, Port Alberni RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
