Application for Nanaimo conference centre hotel calls for more rooms, storeys

NANAIMO — It looks like a proposed hotel beside Nanaimo’s downtown conference centre will be even bigger than originally planned.

Utah-based PEG Developments has applied for a development permit for a nine-storey, 155 room hotel at 100 Gordon St. The application is an increase of three storeys and nearly 40 rooms compared to plans originally announced.

The hotel, to be under the Courtyard by Marriott banner, would include an outdoor patio aligned with Museum Way facing the Port Theatre. The application and renderings were part of the agenda for an Oct. 12 meeting of the City’s design advisory panel. The project will now be reviewed by staff.

In July, council approved the sale of the land to PEG for $750,000. The sale was contingent on several conditions, including requiring PEG to obtain a development permit within four months and complete $1 million worth of physical improvements to the land within 24 months.
