Man pleads guilty to kissing children at Nanaimo park

Jan 4, 2019 | 3:29 PM

NANAIMO — A man was convicted of kissing two children in Nanaimo during what court heard was an unusual alcohol-fueled incident.

Janson Lee Medinsky, 39, pleaded guilty to three charges and four total counts and was freed after being credited for six-and-a-half months already served behind bars.

In an agreed statement of facts, Crown prosecutor Jackie Gaudet said on May 23, 2018 a witness reported Medinsky was picking up and kissing children in a south Nanaimo park.

Medinsky then entered a nearby home where he told the mother he loved her children. Court was told Medinsky then refused to leave, picked up a young girl, spun her around and kissed her on the neck.

Medinsky was arrested the next day and remained locked up until his release on Thursday, Jan. 3.

Medinsky apologized in a brief statement to judge Douglas Cowling.

“It was a very bad day…I’ve learned so much from my time in jail. I’m saying I’m sorry and it will never happen again sir,” Medinsky said.

He wore a red prison jumpsuit and listened attentively throughout the sentencing hearing.

In addition to the common assault on the underage children, Medinsky accepted a peace bond which requires Medinsky to stay away from a female in relation to a February incident.

Medinsky also pleaded guilty to breaking into the VI Fitness location on Bowen Rd. in April.

Peter Hertzberg, Medinsky’s lawyer, said his client has an alcohol problem and wants treatment for his addiction.

Medinsky will be on probation for the next two years, which includes staying away from alcohol and drugs.

He also won’t be able to be around people under the age of 16 without written permission. Medinsky was also ordered to complete treatment programs and psychiatric assessments as directed by his probation officer.

Medinsky’s criminal history includes theft, assault and drug convictions.
