Consistently crash-prone Nanaimo intersections listed as some of V.I.’s worst

Feb 19, 2019 | 4:39 PM

NANAIMO — For the fifth year in a row, the intersection of Bowen Rd. and the Island Highway ranked as one of Vancouver Island’s worst intersections.

There were 71 incidents at the busy spot in 2017, placing it fourth on ICBC’s recently released list of the worst intersections.

The total number of crashes is slightly down from 2016, when it came in third. Bowen Rd. and the Island Highway have never fallen below sixth place on the list in the last five years.

It was joined on the list by two other consistently terrible intersections in Nanaimo, both also involving the Island Highway.

Where the much-trafficked Nanaimo thoroughfare meets Aulds Rd. and Mostar Rd. were listed as the eighth and ninth most dangerous Island intersections.

Sixty-one crashes blocked traffic at Aulds Rd. and the Island Highway. In the last five years, Aulds Rd. and the Nanaimo Parkway has also appeared on the list.

There were 59 accidents at the Mostar Rd. and Island Highway intersection. It was last on the list in 2014, when it was listed as the third most dangerous intersection on Vancouver Island.

Five people lost their lives on Nanaimo roads in 2017.

Despite being one of the most notorious Nanaimo intersections, Northfield Rd. and the Island Highway wasn’t featured on ICBC’s list and hasn’t since 2013.

A significant traffic redevelopment hadn’t yet started in 2017, which is the most recent data available from ICBC.

The top intersections for crashes all fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

They were reached for comment about any plans to revamp the chronic crash sites but didn’t reply by deadline.
