NATIONAL CHAMPS: VIU men’s basketball team wins gold

LANGLEY —The VIU men’s basketball team has been crowned National Champions for the second time.

The Mariners defeated Sheridan College 85-82 to win Gold at the CCAA Nationals at the Langley Events Centre on Saturday night.

For the third time in the tournament VIU came from behind to win the game. VIU trailed Sheridan by 6 points going into the third quarter last night when Guard Harry Fayle scored 12 of his team high 25 points in the final quarter to help guide the Mariners to victory.
 
The win capped off a thrilling tournament and season for VIU after the squad needed to rally from double-digit deficits to secure victories in the quarter and semi-finals.

The Mariners last National title came in 2013.

Meanwhile the VIU women’s basketball team lost 74-64 to the Dawson Blues in the Bronze medal game at the CCAA Nationals in Sainte-Foy Quebec.
