Nanaimo Muslim community ‘overwhelmed’ by heartwarming support at Friday prayer

Mar 22, 2019 | 6:03 PM

NANAIMO — The congregation for Friday prayers and the Islamic Centre of Nanaimo was substantially larger after the community came out to support the Muslim community.

Roughly 100 non-Muslim people prayed and were involved in the ceremony at the centre on Friday, March 22 to express support and solidarity in the wake of the tragic Christchurch, New Zealand shootings which claimed at least 50 lives.

Centre vice-president Noor Islam said they were “overwhelmed” by the response both at home and around the world. Some communities joined hands outside mosques while others participated in prayer.

“Your support is very appreciated,” Islam told the large crowd. “Thank you my friends.”
