NANAIMO — A major thoroughfare into the heart of Nanaimo will be closed to vehicles for six weeks due to seismic upgrades.

Work to improve the Bastion St. Bridge, which is the main connector from downtown Nanaimo to the Old City Quarter, began Monday, March 25. Maintenance work and seismic improvements are expected to extend the service life of the bridge. Decorative additions like signs to help guide tourists to downtown will be added along side efforts to improve the look of the underside of the bridge.

Service interruptions begin on April 8, when the transit exchange currently at the corner of Fitzwilliam St. and Prideaux St. will move to 1 Port Dr. across from the Port Place Shopping Centre. Buses will be rerouted to the new location until the end of August.

The Bastion St. Bridge will close to cars starting May 21 through June 28 while the concrete deck of the bridge is replaced.
